Do you remember? In December of 2014, thousands of people in the Uintah Basin went into work Monday to a ‘steady and secure job’ and went home unemployed before the end of the week.

What would your family do if the local economy took a turn for the worse again? 

With the way things are going right now, that could be next week.

In 2015 I found myself in a difficult situation.

I knew I wanted to stay in the Uintah Basin, and I had the desire to start a family, but I couldn’t find a job that would support a single person, let alone a future family.

I applied for a $14 per hour job that, under normal circumstances, would have appealed to a high school student, and I found myself competing against a thousand plus applicants, many who were seriously overqualified and had far more life experience than I had. Needless to say, I didn’t get the job.

I knew that if I were going to make a decent living in the Uintah Basin, I needed something that wasn’t tied to the local boom and bust economy.

Desperate and broke, I started reading and learning everything I could about starting and running a business online.

But there were a million and one things to learn, and I didn’t have the time or funding to keep going without income, so I just decided to go for the first thing I thoughtI had a chance at.

In November 2015, I started an online store that sold bobble head animals.My friends laughed at me. I laughed with them.

In 2019 that business made enough money to cover 100% of my family’s living expenses (including a $12,000 hospital bill for the delivery of my new baby boy) while taking less than 5 hours a month of my time to operate. In 2020 this business is on track to increase sales 50% over last year while requiring even less of my time.

Best of all, this income will still be around the next time oil crashes.

I learned the hard way that it can be difficult, and sometimes painful, to weather the boom and bust economy of the Uintah Basin. I get it! And so does most of my team.

Most of us have lived here all of our lives. We’ve seen how crazy it can be here when it’s booming, and how dead it can be when it busts. We know how it feels to tighten our belts so hard we can barely breathe. We’ve been there.

We know it can be terrifying to depend on someone else for a paycheck, knowing that as the economy shifts you could be laid off with–or without–a moment’s notice.

We also know that sometimes the way to weather the economic storm is to try something different. 

Last summer, I founded Ducimus Digital Solutions, a company dedicated to helping other people succeed online. We’re working with clients across the United States to help them start and improve their online presence. 

A few weeks ago, I got a wild hair: I decided to host a course specifically for people in the Uintah Basin who are in the same situation I was in 5 years ago.
